Bach Duets for Guitar and Ukulele: Is such a thing even possible?

rbedwell3

Do you play guitar and have a friend or family member that plays ukulele or do you play uke and have a friend who plays guitar? Well, the latest book from Locrian publishing could be right up your alley.

Tony Mizen and R G Bedwell have spent the last year selecting, transcribing and arranging classic pieces by J. S. Bach for guitar and ukulele. This includes a selection from the Well Tempered Clavier, Goldberg Variations, Inventions and Sinfonias, Chorals and Suites. These are all included in their latest book, Perspectives: Duets for Guitar and Ukulele Volume I: Bach.

Each piece has been carefully arranged so that none of the original notes are omitted but instead the difficulty levels are tempered so that each instrument is not overwhelmed by complexity, and the music flows.

Another innovation in this edition is the choice to have the instruments on facing pages, instead of above each other on one page, which allows for greater ease of sight reading and reduces the chances of losing one’s place when jumping to the next stave down.

The motivation behind this endeavour is to bring the music of J. S. Bach to a wider playing public. Bach’s music is often at a level that only the advanced musician can attempt, with difficult stretches, complex fingerings and dense harmonic scoring. This edition aims to reduce the load on musicians so that beginner to intermediate players can enjoy the experience of playing an authentic arrangement of Bach’s music at home or in public.
